When are the Christmas lights switched on in Leicester?
The clocks have gone back, the nights are drawing in, the Christmas lights have started to go up in the city centre and were just days away from this years festive John Lewis TV advert, and with the HUGE news that the Coca Cola Christmas Truck is visiting Leicester this year, it’s time to start thinking seriously about Christmas 2015.
The big event at Christmas though is the switching on of the lights – which heralds the start of late night shopping throughout Leicester city centre in the run up to Christmas.
This year the Christmas lights are being switched on at 4.30pm on Sunday 22 November.
There will be a full day of activities and events in the build up to the big switch-on, including:
11am – 5.30pm Winter Food & Drink Fair, Leicester Market
12noon – 5pm See our festive reindeer with Santa’s sleigh and the city views on the Wheel of Light
2pm – 3.45pm Snow white cast from DMH pantomime at the Carpet of Light (outside Visit Leicester) – Take a selfie with one of the stars!
2pm – 5pm Musical entertainment and festive displays in Town Hall Square
2pm – 5pm Main stage programme at Humberstone Gate West with comperes from BBC Radio
From 4pm Theatre of Light at St. Peter’s Square, Highcross
4.30pm Lights switch on at the main stage on Humberstone Gate West
5pm – 8pm Light the Night games and digital playground in the Cultural Quarter
Leicester’s Winter Food Festival
On the day of the Christmas lights switch-on there will be the 7th annual Leicester Winter Food Festival going on in town.
This free event will feature over 150 different stalls offering a range of food and drinks as well as unique handmade crafts – everything you need to get into the Christmas spirit.
Throughout the days there will be a lot of entertainment – from cooking demos and face painting to live music and local choirs. You can also get merry in the ‘drink zone’, which will feature local ales, Christmas-themed cocktails and, of course, mulled wine.
